How to Choose an Alcohol Flow Meter

How to Choose an Alcohol Flow Meter? A Coriolis Selection Case Study for 99.9% Concentration, 80–120 m³/h Operating Conditions

Measuring the flow rate of high-concentration alcohol has always been a major challenge in scenarios such as alcohol production, solvent preparation, or pharmaceutical fermentation.

Especially for alcohol with a stable concentration of 99.8%–99.9%, which has extremely low conductivity and very low viscosity, conventional electromagnetic, vortex, and turbine flow meters almost always fail.

Today, a customer raised a very typical selection requirement, and we have compiled this case study for your reference.

      I. Customer Operating Conditions: Typical High-Purity Alcohol Pipeline

      Media: Alcohol (Ethanol)

      Concentration: 99.8%–99.9%

      Pipe Diameter: 3" ANSI 150

      Flow Rate: 80–120 m³/h

      Density: 0.791 kg/L

      Viscosity: 0.99–1.3 cP

      Temperature: 27–40°C

      Power Supply: 110–220V AC

      Output Signal: 4–20mA

      Communication: Standard

      Transmitter Type: Compact (Type)

The customer's core requirement is clear: stable and accurate measurement of high-concentration alcohol flow rate (80–120 m³/h) on a 3-inch pipeline.

II. Why must a Coriolis flow meter be used for this type of operation?

Many users ask: Can't vortex or rotor flow meters work?

      Let's take a brief look:

Electromagnetic flow meters: require the medium to be conductive; 99.9% alcohol is essentially non-conductive, ❌ unusable.

Vortex flow meters: sensitive to low-viscosity, low-density media; prone to pulse loss at low flow rates, ❌ unstable.

Turbine flow meters: have rotating parts; alcohol has poor lubrication, resulting in significant wear over long-term operation, ❌ high maintenance costs.

do not depend on conductivity or flow state

directly measure mass flow rate, unaffected by changes in temperature, pressure, or viscosity

can simultaneously output density, temperature, and concentration estimates

✅ is currently the recognized optimal solution for high-concentration alcohol metering.

III. Recommended Selection Results (with calculation basis)

For the customer's 3" pipeline + For operating conditions of 80–120 m³/h alcohol, our technical team recommends:

CIXIFM Coriolis Flow Meter, DN80 (3-inch) Integrated Type

      Key Selection Points:

      Project | Conclusion
Diameter Matching DN80 | Direct Connection to 3" Pipeline, No Reduction Required, No Additional Pressure Loss
Flow Coverage | Fully Covers 80–120 m³/h, and Does Not Operate Long-Term in Extreme Ranges
Accuracy Class | ±0.1%–0.2% (Mass Flow Rate)
Pressure Loss | Approximately 0.5 bar at 120 m³/h, Does Not Affect Pump Operation
Material | 316L Stainless Steel, Resistant to Alcohol Corrosion
Transmitter | Integrated Type, 4–20mA, 110–220V AC, Easy on-site Installation

      Special Reminder from Technical Colleagues:

At 120 m³/h At high flow rates, pressure loss and zero-point stability are the most common pitfalls in Coriolis selection. This calculation has been checked point by point and fully meets the requirements for continuous production.

IV. Two Practical Suggestions for Selection Engineers:

Don't just look at the pipe diameter; consider the flow velocity corresponding to the flow rate.

A 3-inch pipe running 120 m³/h of alcohol already has a high velocity. When selecting a Coriolis, it's crucial to confirm the back pressure and sensor vibration stability at high flow rates.

      Integrated Transmitter ≠ Simple
Alcohol is highly volatile. When installing an integrated transmitter in the field, it's recommended to avoid direct spraying and strong vibration locations, otherwise, long-term zero-point stability will be affected.
